ByL ife Issues Institute

June 25, 2010

“…Judges will often try to mold and steer the law in order to promote certain ethical values and achieve certain social ends. Such activity is not necessarily wrong or invalid.”
- Elena Kagan, US Supreme Court Nominee

Monday marks the start of US Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan’s confirmation hearings. The weeklong question-and-answer session is held before the Senate Judiciary Committee in hopes of uncovering more about her background and judicial philosophy.

What we already know about Kagan is deeply alarming. Even before serving as President Obama’s solicitor general (arguing the administration’s point of view before the Supreme Court), Kagan showcased a deep-rooted hostility for the unborn, the vulnerable and those who would seek to protect them.

She sent financial contributions to groups aligned with pro-abortion agendas.

She criticized regulations keeping American tax dollars from paying for pro-abortion programs.

She tried to silence critics of activist judges, actually calling the critics “irresponsible”!

She recommended President Clinton support a phony ban on partial birth abortion, in spite of her belief it would be unconstitutional.

She argued that federal funding for pregnancy-related programs should be completely off limits to religious groups.

She expressed a belief that making physician-assisted suicide a federal crime would be “a fairly terrible idea.”

She supported cloning of human embryos for research.

There’s no doubt that Elena Kagan is a liberal activist intent on pushing aside the US Constitution in favor of a radical social agenda. We can hardly expect less. She was, after all, nominated by the most pro-abortion president in the history of our nation.

In fact, President Obama envisioned this very situation on the campaign trail in 2008. “With one more vacancy on the Supreme Court,” he said, “we could be looking at a majority hostile to a women’s fundamental right to choose for the first time since Roe v. Wade. The next president may be asked to nominate that Supreme Court justice. That is what is at stake in this election.”

If Obama’s wish comes true and people like Kagan get a majority on the Supreme Court, we’re in big trouble. It will no longer matter who we elect in Novembers to come. Those nine judges will have all the power they need to overrule congressional and presidential efforts to protect life. That’s why we can’t afford to sit back. Each new appointment is so crucial.

The Supreme Court’s rulings affect us every day—in matters of racial equality, labor laws, medical ethics, property rights, even how we spend our money—so certainly, this nomination is about more than abortion. But how a potential justice views the right to life is the most basic indicator of their ethics and values. Unfortunately, Kagan has displayed a longstanding disdain for life-affirming policies.

Please don’t let Elena Kagan be a shoo-in to the Supreme Court. Contact your senators and tell them they must oppose her nomination. The decision is in their hands, but we can do our part to let them know we care.

Sincerely,

4 AM, May 1st, 2010

I’m not Catholic, and currently, I’m not attending church anywhere.

The Life movement to date has been characterized by Catholic pro-lifers and Church leaders justly preaching that human life is sacred from conception to natural death.

The point is: that baby’s alive.

This is true, inside or outside of church. The child, in the womb or the test-tube, the black baby, the white one, the whole baby, the disabled baby, is just like you: alive.

He’s alive.

He’s alive whether you believe in the God of the Scriptures or not, wherever he happens to be: even if he happens to be awaiting death at the monolithic human-abattoir in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Curtis Boyd hopes to make a great deal of money killing kids there, in the bloody red light district he has built. Think who Curtis Boyd’s abortion targets are: Indian and Latino children, the children of poor White folks and poor Black folks, those on the fringes of society and society’s best. Seres humanos, como tu y como yo. Poor, uninformed souls; the desperate, the weak, the hopeless; unaware that Life is the eternal, precious, wholesome, incredible gift, they are lead to believe that abortion will solve their temporal problems.

They are unaware too of the risks to their young bodies, the risk of cervical damage, of scarred wombs and more deeply scarred lives, of breast cancer risks, of future children’s lives lost, those oft to be wept for in the distant future; much wanted, but impossible now to carry, due to abortion ravaged wombs. Abortion strips a woman of her self; and long into that distant future, at 4 AM she will regret the actions of her youth, the loss of her breasts and family relations. She will weep for those lost sons and daughters all her life: and apart from Christ, there would be no peace at all.

As economics drive the huge, unyielding mechanisms of death, the grist and fodder become our youngest souls and frailest lives; those at the opening and closing of the gates of Life. If there is to be any work worth doing, any action worth taking, any risk of being find out as a Life advocate, take it, now. Do not let New Mexico’s posterity be destroyed by those who annihilate infants for monetary gain!

I am appealing to everyone on the fringe and in the fabric of Life for Albuquerque to speak now and draw together. Si eres Latino, escuchame:

Este es tu momento pro-vida. Parate conmigo contra el abattoir de vidas humanas en Albuquerque, Nuevo Mejico.

Speak up. Speak out. Close the human-abattoir in Albuquerque.

Never let it be.

Eve Sanchez Silver silver@cocolife.us

Abortion activists at NARAL, a radical pro-abortion organization, have a problem. They’re running out of committed supporters and don’t know why.

The group just released survey results showing an “intensity gap” among young voters. More than half of pro-lifers under age 30 considered abortion a “very important” voting issue, compared to just one-quarter of abortion-minded youth. This comes at the heels of a Gallup poll announcing that 18- to 29-year-olds are now the most likely, of all age groups, to favor making abortion illegal in all circumstances.

The wave of pro-life passion puzzles NARAL President Nancy Keenan. In this week’s Newsweek magazine, Keenan recalled her visit to the March for Life rally in Washington, DC. The annual event drew tens of thousands of energized pro-lifers. “I just thought, my gosh, they are so young,” she told the reporter. “There are so many of them, and they are so young.”

Pro-abortion activists aren’t accustomed to seeing so many young people in their circles. A natural outshoot of choosing a line of work that promotes death. But like most other aging abortion proponents, Keenan can’t seem to connect the dots. Where, they marvel, have all their young supporters gone? Former NARAL President Kate Michelman admits information is on the side of pro-lifers. “The technology has clearly helped to define how people think about a fetus as a full, breathing human being,” she told Newsweek. “The other side has been able to use the technology to its own end.”

And she’s right. Our mission at Life Issues Institute is to educate communities with the truth, and we’re succeeding every day. Mothers continually tell us they decided against an abortion because they saw their baby by ultrasound—that they walked out of the abortion mill because of a compelling photograph. That they changed their mind because they read a brochure about the development of their unborn baby.

But there’s an even more obvious, and tragic explanation for NARAL’s problem. The mathematical reality is that their supporters grew up, exercised their “right” to kill their children, and now who’s left? A lot of blossoming families who do value life.

The beauty of the pro-life movement is our children. From small beginnings, they grow to become influential young adults who can stand for life, because they have it. Until every child is guaranteed that right to life, we will continue to fight with passion, with hope and with truth on our side.

Attorneys prepare for appeal of ruling.

Parents are one step closer to being notified if their underage daughter is considering terminating her pregnancy, after a judge dismissed a challenge to the Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act today.

Cook County Court Judge Daniel Riley did impose a stay of his decision that will allow the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) time to file an appeal. The ACLU confirmed in a statement it “will move swiftly to appeal.”

The law passed in 1995, but has been stalled in the for years by legal challenges.

The act requires physicians to notify the parents of an underage woman at least 48 hours before performing an abortion.

The Thomas More Society has led the battle to revive the law.

“Today’s ruling represents a great step toward ending underage secret abortions in Illinois,” said Peter Breen, executive director and legal counsel for the group. “This written decision represents the first time an Illinois court has upheld the Parental Notice Act of 1995 against the ACLU’s challenge. We look forward to the day that abortion providers are made to respect the rights of parents to know before their daughters are taken for abortions.”

Mailee Smith, staff counsel with Americans United for Life, said the ruling has broad implications in protecting the health and welfare of minors outside of Illinois.

“Minors from other states come to Illinois to avoid their own state parental notice laws,” she explained.

Health care workers may be in scarce supply in years ahead.

President Obama signed the historic health care bill today that includes federal funding of abortions.

Attorneys general from 13 states immediately filed a lawsuit challenging the law that breaks with more than 30 years of federal policy prohibiting the use of federal dollars to directly pay for abortions.

Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum is heading up the lawsuit that was filed in federal court in Pensacola, Fla., to “protect the rights and interests of American citizens.”

South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster said the health care reform is “an assault against the Constitution.”

“A legal challenge by the states,” he said, “appears to be the only hope of protecting the American people from this unprecedented attack on our system of government.”

Nebraska, Texas, Michigan, Utah, Pennsylvania, Alabama, South Dakota, Louisiana, Idaho, Washington and Colorado are also joining in the battle.

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said all Americans need to speak up.

“I’m going to fight this to the end,” he said. “I would just encourage every American – regardless of how dispirited you feel – to fight.”

He also encouraged people to remember the passing of the bill during this Fall’s election cycle.

“If we turn out everyone who voted for this thing,” he said, “we can change things. If Americans just forget and go on to other things as the Democrats think they will, then we’ll be in trouble.”

DeMint also reminded people that thousands of health care workers have said they’ll leave the profession because language in the bill violates their conscience rights and forces them to either participate in or perform abortions.

“This will go into action a few years from now,” he said, “and we’ll all be wondering why we can’t find any doctors.”

TAKE ACTION
If your lawmaker is on this list please contact him or her and let them know that the president’s executive order does not do enough to protect preborn lives. These lawmakers were urged to vote “no” on pro-life grounds, but failed to do so.
